Hi gang!
The presentation on November 9th went well. At least one person
emailed me about switching to Linux! Here's the summary of the
presentation for everyone who wasn't there:
Trusted Computing creates an environment in which users' computers can
be reliably called upon to perform tasks for people (or computers)
other than the user.
Such tasks include things like activating a user's fingerprint reader,
webcam or other biometric device to capture physical information about
the person in front of the computer. Groups such as tightly knit
online communities and Internet shopping sites have demonstrated a
desire for this kind of information in the past. However, when this
kind of information about the user is available, it takes away the
anonymity that protects marginalized groups from racism (or sexism, or
ageism, or ....) online.
Further, Free computers and the Free Internet form a powerful
communication medium useful to groups fighting oppression. Trusted
Computing could be used to selectively deny such groups the benefit of
those powerful collaboration tools.
Good night,
Eric
